Chicago Fire: Does Jesse Spencer have an accent in real life?

Jesse Spencer may have left Chicago Fire last season, but the actor has remained in the mix ever since. He’s made a handful of cameos since his character, Casey, decided to move to Oregon, and he’s recently been confirmed to appear in the season 11 finale.

It’s been one of the bright spots of the season to get Casey back in the mix, and Spencer has been doing lots of interviews in the lead up to the finale. The ones that have been conducted on camera may surprise new viewers, however, as they reveal Spencer’s real-life accent.

Does Jesse Spencer have an Australian accent?

While Casey is a Chicago native who speaks with an American accent, Spencer is an Australian who has a radically different accent when he’s off the set. It’s a testament to his ability as an actor that he does such a convincing job of playing an American, but it’s not as easy as it looks.

Spencer discussed the challenges of mastering a different accent with One Chicago Center back in 2018. “It just takes a lot more work,” he revealed. “You can’t just show up and do it. There’s a bit more homework that you have to do, in terms of sounds and combinations of sounds and musicality or lack of musicality.

The actor also noted that the different accents of the cast members can result in it being difficult to get on the same page. “We did a take once in I think it was season 2, with Eamonn [Walker] and Daisy Betts. We had three foreigners in the room, and we tried to do a take in our own accent and it was so hard,” he added. While it’s been confirmed that Spencer will return for the finale, the details surrounding his character’s storyline have been kept under wraps so we can’t wait to find out how he factors into the show’s larger story.
