Sons Of Anarchy: Wendy's Ending Explained

With Sons of Anarchy centered around the titular motorcycle club, most SAMCRO members and their loved ones meet bloody fates, which makes Wendy Case's ending unique. Wendy is protagonist Jax Teller's ex-wife and the mother of his eldest son, Abel, and based on the pilot, she almost had an entirely different ending than the one she ultimately got.

In the first Sons of Anarchy episode, Wendy and Jax are no longer together, and she goes prematurely into labor with Abel. It's revealed that Wendy is addicted to methamphetamine and used during her pregnancy. Jax's mother Gemma threatens Wendy to stay away from her son forever.

After going to rehab, Wendy returns in Sons of Anarchy season 4 having remained sober throughout her absence and seeking custody of her son. This kicks off a disturbing next chapter in her relationship with Jax that leads to him forcibly injecting drugs into her arm. However, after Tara's death, Wendy and Jax put aside their differences because he wants Abel and Thomas, his son with Tara, to have a mother figure. Though Sons of Anarchy is essentially a series of the SAMCRO president's bad decisions, Jax sees that Abel and Thomas are safest with Wendy, and this is what leads to her ending in the show.

Wendy & Nero Take The Boys And Leave Charming Unscathed

When Jax learns of Nero's plan to buy a farm and leave Charming and all the violence behind, he asks Nero to take Wendy and the boys with him, which is ultimately what happens. Wendy is last seen in the passenger seat with Nero as he drives her, Abel, and Thomas to safety. Though Sons of Anarchy ends with Jax's death, and Wendy will undoubtedly be grief-stricken when she finds out, she is one of the few Sons of Anarchy characters to truly get a happy ending.

While Wendy has a lot of bad things happen to her throughout the course of Sons of Anarchy, she has more agency than most other characters. She has no club to serve like the members of SAMCRO, so every action is entirely her own choice, and she actively fights for her son despite the dangerous obstacles standing between them. It's a happy moment to see Wendy get custody of the kids and be rewarded for her strength and selflessness in the end.

The Most Peaceful Sons Of Anarchy Characters Get The Best Endings

Sons of Anarchy is a show about criminals, most of whom die as violently as they lived. Though SAMCRO has a few remaining members at the end, the club is largely decimated. In contrast, Wendy has the distinction of being one of the only Sons of Anarchy characters who never killed anybody. While she made mistakes, she learned from them, and sought to carve out a peaceful life for herself and the boys. Similarly, though Nero had a criminal past, his character arc is all about him looking for an exit strategy from his old life.

Sons of Anarchy had plenty of innocent victims, but it posits that those like Wendy and Nero, who seek a peaceful existence, will be largely rewarded in the end. Jax, Clay, and other Sons of Anarchy characters with a high kill count are the ones who had the grizzliest fates. Ironically, the show begins with Jax wanting a life free of violence and danger, but he fails and dies for it, whereas Wendy succeeds and lives.
