Terminator's Kyle Reese Secretly Survived the First Movie (& Met John)

Kyle Reese made the ultimate sacrifice in The Terminator to save the life of Sarah Connor and ensure the existence of John Connor, at least, that’s what fans thought. As it turns out, Reese actually survived the first movie. Not only that, but he even got the chance to meet his son, John Connor.

In the first Terminator film, Kyle Reese is chosen specifically by the leader of the human resistance against the machines, John Connor, to go back in time to protect John’s mother from a Terminator already traveled to the past. Reese thought this mission was going to be as simple as protect Sarah and kill a single Terminator, but he didn’t count on the possibility that he and Sarah would catch feelings for each other.

While they were only together for a short period of time, Kyle and Sarah decided to consummate their love. Unfortunately, that act of passion would be their last together, as the Terminator quickly found them and nearly killed them both. Sarah got the best of the Terminator and destroyed it, but Kyle didn’t survive the encounter. Reese died that night, and about a month later, Sarah learned she was pregnant with his child–the very child Reese was sent back in time to protect, and unwittingly be the father of. Tragically, Reese died before he got to meet John, or even know that he was the father of the man who sent him back in time to begin with.

In the three-part miniseries The Terminator: 1984 by Zach Whedon and Andy MacDonald, it’s revealed that someone else went back in time to 1984 after Kyle Reese did: Ben. Ben was a fellow freedom fighter with Reese in the year 2029, and fought alongside Kyle before his time-sliding mission to the past. In order to offer Reese some backup (as well as for personal reasons of his own) Ben followed Kyle to the past,

where he learned that Reese didn’t actually die after his encounter with the T-800, but instead was bagged and shipped to a secret and secure facility run by a shadowy corner of the government. These agents knew Kyle was from the future, and they couldn’t risk him alerting anyone in the present of the dangers of Skynet. So, when the time came to clean up the aftermath of the final showdown against the Terminator, the agents took that as the perfect opportunity to take Kyle Reese in alive, and keep him imprisoned, all while Sarah thought he was dead.

Kyle Reese Got to Meet His Son

Ben was the game-changer the series needed to bring back Reese, as he witnessed Kyle survive the Terminator’s attack, and then he saw the powers-that-be take him away. Then, a few months later, Ben took this information to Sarah Connor, and the two of them busted Kyle out of his cell and ran away to freedom. After living in peace for a few months after that, it finally came time for Sarah to give birth to John. Unfortunately, it was at that exact moment that this small family of Kyle, Sarah, and Ben were attacked by yet another Terminator. While Ben helped Sarah deliver the baby, Kyle fought the killer android, killing it before it could reach Sarah. But, sadly, Kyle suffered some fatal wounds, and was slowly dying, thereby fulfilling his original fate after having been granted a few extra months of happiness beforehand.

Kyle Reese died peacefully with his newborn son in his arms, which is as happy an ending as a character who was destined for death from the start could hope for. Originally, Kyle had no idea he was John’s father, as he died before he knew Sarah was even pregnant. But here, in this story, Kyle Reese was not only shown surviving the events of The Terminator, he was also given the chance to know about and meet his son, the hope of humanity, John Connor.
