The Star Trek: Picard Finale Promotion You Probably Missed

One of Star Trek: Picard season 3's new young heroes received a promotion in the series finale, but many viewers might have missed it. Following the defeat of the Borg and the Changelings at the disastrous Frontier Day, promotions were granted by Starfleet.

Dr. Beverly Crusher (Gates McFadden) became an Admiral and was made head of Starfleet Medical for her work in curing Borg-infected Starfleet Officers and identifying Changelings posing as Starfleet Officers. Meanwhile, Seven of Nine (Jeri Ryan) was formally made Captain of the USS Enterprise-G.

Star Trek: Picard season 3 ended with a time jump to one year later where Jack Crusher (Ed Speleers), the son of Admirals Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) and Beverly Crusher, is now a graduate of an accelerated Starfleet Academy program. Ensign Crusher was assigned to the new Enterprise and named as Special Counselor to the Captain. Jack will be seated on the Enterprise bridge to Captain Seven's left, and he'll be surrounded by his crew mates like Lt. Matthew Mura (Joseph Lee), and Sidney La Forge (Ashlei Sharpe Chestnut), who shared a flirtation with Picard's son during season 3.

Lt Sidney La Forge

It may have escaped some viewers of Star Trek: Picard season 3's finale that Sidney La Forge was also promoted, and she is now Lieutenant La Forge. Sidney was an Ensign throughout Star Trek: Picard season 3 when she was the helmsman of the USS Titan-A (who carried the unfortunate nickname 'Crash La Forge'). But in the closing moments of Picard's finale set on the USS Enterprise-G, which is the rechristened Titan, Sidney is now wearing two pips on her Starfleet uniform's collar, one of which is hollow, signifying her new rank of Lieutenant, junior grade.

Sidney certainly earned her promotion to Lieutenant in Star Trek: Picard season 3. La Forge's piloting skills enabled the Titan to escape the dangerous Ryton Nebula, which turned out to birth a species of space jellyfish. Sidney also risked her life alongside Jack to implement Admiral Picard's plan to trap Captain Vadic (Amanda Plummer) and the Changelings who boarded and temporarily commandeered the Titan. Sidney also helped Jack steal and install a Klingon cloaking device that saved the Titan on several occasions. Unfortunately, Sidney was among the young Starfleet crew who were assimilated by the Borg, but that doesn't take away the exemplary valor Crash La Forge displayed that earned her Lieutenant's pips.

Geordi Alandra La Forge Picard 3-1

Meanwhile, it's unclear if Sidney's sister, Alandra La Forge (Mica Burton), was also promoted to Lieutenant in Star Trek: Picard season 3's finale. Alandra was an Ensign working alongside her father, Commodore Geordi La Forge (LeVar Burton) at the Fleet Museum on Athan Prime before they both joined Admiral Picard's mission. Curiously, Picard referred to Alandra as "Lieutenant" in Star Trek: Picard season 3, episode 7, "Dominion," but the Admiral must have misspoken because the young La Forge clearly only had the one Ensign pip on her Starfleet uniform collar.

Alandra did not appear in the one-year-later segment of Star Trek: Picard season 3's finale, so if she was promoted to Lieutenant, junior grade, as her sister Sidney was, it wasn't canonically verified on-screen. It's quite possible Alandra is also a Lieutenant in 2402, but whether she returned to the Fleet Museum with her father or also was stationed on the USS Enterprise-G (or elsewhere) will need to be confirmed in Picard's proposed spinoff, Star Trek: Legacy. But we know for sure Alandra's sister is officially Lieutenant Sidney La Forge as of the end of Star Trek: Picard, though mainly sharp-eyed viewers caught her new rank and pips.
