After 15 seasons, Supernatural came to an end in November 2020, and while the series finale disappointed fans for a variety of reasons, one of the most significant problems was the episode's lack of cameos. Supernatural tells the story of brothers Sam and Dean Winchester as they take on the most evil monsters in the world to save themselves and humanity. The CW show began as a horror series but later used comedy and self-awareness to create its own unique universe.
Over the many seasons, the Winchesters met countless people that became their friends and support systems. From angels and demons to regular hunters and civilians, these characters made an impact on the brothers and the series as a whole. Unfortunately though, most of these characters also died at some point during the 15 seasons. Despite this, Supernatural always has a way of bringing the dead back to life and this certainly should have happened in the series finale if the COVID-19 pandemic had not had an effect on filming.
10 Crowley

Though he likely would not have returned for Supernatural's series finale due to Crowley actor Mark Sheppard's leaving on bad terms, the snarky demon's return would have been amazing. In the series, Crowley was a crossroads demon and the King of Hell who met the Winchesters in season 5 and was eventually killed in season 12. Despite being introduced to the show as a villain, Crowley eventually became a friend to the brothers and used his power over demonkind to help them in dangerous times. His return certainly would have pleased fans and could even have given him some sort of happy ending, wherever he went after death.
9 Ellen, Jo, and Ash

Although Ellen Harvelle, Jo Harvelle, and Ash appeared in some of the earliest seasons of Supernatural their return would have been imperative, especially as the real series finale included the Harvelle Roadhouse where audiences first met the characters. Ellen Harvelle was the owner of a roadhouse in Nebraska and a hunter alongside her daughter Jo, while Ash, also a resident of the Roadhouse, was a computer genius. All three helped the Winchesters from their first appearance in season 2 up until they sacrificed themselves for the boys in season 5, though they made posthumous cameos in later seasons.
The lack of Ellen, Jo, and Ash was especially apparent because of the appearance of the Harvelle Roadhouse in the Supernatural series finale. It would have made sense that along with the bar, the brothers would reunite with the characters who introduced them to that place, and they could reminisce and say thank you. There even could've been the renewal of an old romantic spark, which existed between Dean and Jo earlier in the series. In this way, their absence was especially felt.
8 Meg

Despite being one of Supernatural's earliest villains, an appearance by Meg in the series finale would have been especially nostalgic and fun. Like Crowley, Meg first appeared as a villain in season 1 as she was a demon who was a loyal follower of Lucifer and Azazel. Meg caused trouble for the Winchesters and was an uneasy presence, however, in season 5 she returned to form a loose alliance with the brothers against Crowley who eventually killed Meg in season 8. Although she wasn't especially powerful, Meg made a significant impact on the early seasons of Supernatural and definitely deserved some attention in the series finale.
7 Jody Mills, Annie Jones, and Claire Novak

As some of the only living characters left on Supernatural, it was a serious shame that Jody Mills and her adopted daughters Annie and Claire did not appear in the series finale. The boys met Jody Mills, the sheriff of Sioux Falls, in season 5 and continued to receive help from her as a police officer and a hunter until the very end of the series. Unlike most Supernatural side characters, Jodie did not die but instead adopted wayward young girls Annie and Claire, among others. Claire Novak was the daughter of Jimmy, Castiel's vessel while Annie was lure for a nest of vampires before being taken in by Jody.
The appearance of Jody, Annie, and Claire would have been ideal not only because they're still alive but also because it would have shown that the tradition of hunting will continue on without Sam and Dean. In a sense, these women have the only happy ending of Supernatural's many characters, and it would have made sense to use their story as inspiration. Even as Dean dies and Sam grows into old age, the people they have met along the way will still be doing good and protecting the world from evil.
6 Charlie

One of the most unique characters to appear on Supernatural was Charlie Bradbury. The nerdy redhead was a skilled hacker hired by Supernatural's season 7 villains the Leviathans who eventually turned over to the Winchesters side. From season 7 to 10, she became a hunter but suffered a tragic end after trying to relieve Dean of his Mark of Cain. Charlie's death was especially heartbreaking because of her optimistic, kind spirit. As an iconic character and memorable comic relief, it would have been satisfying to see Charlie return for the series finale. Once again, the Winchesters could have thanked her for her help and audiences could see how she is faring in heaven now.
5 Kevin

In a similar vein, Kevin Tran was a character who came from a semi-normal background but quickly became sucked into the Winchesters world, for better and worse. The brothers met Kevin in season 7 after discovering him to be a Prophet who could help defeat the Leviathans. Kevin remained a friend to the Winchesters until his shocking death in season 9 by the angel Gadreel. Kevin's story only becomes darker as God claimed to have brought his soul into Heaven, which is later revealed to be a lie. Kevin resided in Hell and in season 15, decided to become a ghost wandering the earth instead.
Kevin's sad story from life and throughout his death is a major reason why he should have returned for the Supernatural series finale. Despite being a major help to the Winchesters and a fairly innocent young man, Kevin is forced into an afterlife that is painful and upsetting. The series finale should have given Kevin a sense of peace and a more satisfying ending.
4 Gabriel

As one of the most beloved angels in Supernatural, Gabriel was sorely missed during the series finale. Gabriel first appeared in season 2 as a trickster and later, it is revealed that Gabriel was actually an archangel posing as the trickster god Loki. Gabriel remained in the series until his heroic death in season 13 wherein he fought Michael to give the Winchesters an escape. Overall, Gabriel was one of the most entertaining and lovable characters in the series, and while his death was incredibly brave, it did not have to be the end. Gabriel should have come back in the series finale for a final round of jokes.
3 Jack

Though a late addition to Supernatural's cast, Jack seemed like a definite choice for a cameo in the series finale, but unfortunately he did not appear. Jack was Lucifer's son who the Winchesters adopted to teach him to control his powers. Jack played a significant role in taking down Michael, and though he died for a time after losing his grace, the brothers resurrected him. Jack's importance in the later seasons of Supernatural, and his status as one of the last living characters, made him a perfect candidate to return in the series finale. Like Jody, Jack could have exemplified how the Supernatural world continues even as the story ends.
2 John and Mary

As the ones who started it all, Sam and Dean's parents John and Mary should have been vital cameos in the series finale. John and Mary both appear in season 1 and make various posthumous cameos later in the series. Although Supernatural is about Sam and Dean, the series really originates from John and Mary and the many tragedies they faced together. Especially in the face of Dean's death it would have been immensely satisfying to see him go to Heaven and reunite with his parents who he fought so hard for. John's acceptance and Mary's love would have been paramount for Dean and definitely would've been a full circle moment for audiences.
1 Castiel

Above all, the angel Castiel, who is arguably a third Winchester, should have appeared in the Supernatural series finale. Castiel first appeared in season 4 and remained in the show until the very last season. Castiel not only protected the Winchesters, but sacrificed himself often, went against God, and formed close bonds with Sam and Dean that defied what seemed possible for angels. His death occurred in season 15 when Castiel sacrificed himself to save Jack's life, leaving an impressive legacy in his wake. As an integral part of Team Free Will and one of Supernatural's best characters, there's no question that Cas should have appeared in the series finale.
Although the uncontrollable circumstances of COVID-19 made it impossible for Supernatural's showrunners to gather these characters for cameos in the series finale, it is still disappointing that the show ended the way it did. After so many seasons and so much death, it would have been much more satisfying to see happy endings for all of those who died for the Winchesters. Hopefully, in the future, a Supernaturalreunion may be able to offer audiences the satisfying ends that they desired all along.
