Why Molly Burnett Left Law & Order: SVU

The long-running crime series Law and Order: SVU confirms the exit of fan-favorite actor Molly Burnett.

Per TVLine, the loss of Burnett's Detective Grace Muncy was made evident during Thursday’s two-hour SVU/Organized Crime crossover episode, which also served as the finale for both series. In the first half, Muncy is heard discussing the potential move to a task force position, which is further indicated when Ice Cube's Detective Fin Tutuola tells her that he will miss her. Together, these sequences confirmed the offer and Muncy's acceptance of another job outside the purview of the eponymous Special Victims Unit.

Burnett joined the series in 2022, with her tenure on the series ultimately only adding up to two dozen appearances, not including her appearance on Law and Order: Organized Crime. Detective Muncy was introduced as having recently made the move to the SVU from a Bronx gang unit. Prior to her debut on Law and Order: SVU, Burnett had made a name for herself on the silver screen with appearances on other procedurals including CSI: Cyber and CSI: NY, as well as with a recurring contract role on Days of Our Lives as Melanie Jonas.

Ahead of the two-part crossover season finale episode, Law and Order: SVU alum Kelli Giddish was spotted on set in a surprise return to her role as Detective Amanda Rollins. Giddish, who had been with the series since her debut in 2011, spoke in December about her part in crafting her character's exit from the franchise. "We worked on this storyline together," Giddish explained. "I think the last episode culminated the beautiful Rollins and Benson relationship, and we got to see Carisi and Rollins get married, which was such a treat."

In April, prior to the ongoing writers strike, it was announced that both Law and Order series had been renewed for another season alongside Dick Wolf's Chicago franchise, both of which will remain at Universal Television. "Universal Television has been my home for almost 40 years," Wolf said of the deal. "It has been, and continues to be, one of the most successful partnerships in television, and I am thrilled that we are keeping the trains running another four years." As per the renewal deal, both the Law & Order and Chicago franchises will see production continue through 2027.
