Chicago Fire has a pattern, and it’s one that’s troubling given what happened to Mouch (Christian Stolte) in the season 11 finale. The pattern is that when one of the firefighters get mortally hurt in a season finale, they tend to die in the following premiere.
We obviously love Mouch, and don’t want him to perish, but when taking stock of the pattern that the show and its writers have solidified over the years, we can’t help but be concerned for his well being. That’s not even taking into account the message that Christian Stolte posted on IG the night of the finale.
With this in mind, here are 3 One Chicago characters who got killed off in season premieres.
What episode does Darden die on Chicago Fire?
Chicago Fire wasted no time with the season premiere rule by killing off a character in the series premiere. The unlucky character was, of course, Andy Darden (Corey Sorenson), the friend of Casey (Jesse Spencer) who perished in a fire before the credits rolled. It was an attention-grabbing way to start the show as it solidified how dangerous the lives of these firefighters could be.
Darden’s death is still having repercussions in the modern day, as Casey moved to Oregon to watch after his late friend’s kids. We got to see a little bit more of Darden in the flashback-filled season 3 premiere, but he still remains a bit of mystery compared to the rest of the 51.
What episode did Shay die on Chicago Fire?
Shay (Lauren German) was the show’s first major death. The decision to have her go down in a fire in the season 3 premiere was shocking by virtue of how it happened, but also how it affected the rest of the cast. Shay and Severide (Taylor Kinney) were incredibly close, and we knew from the moment she flatlined that Severide would go into a tailspin (he did exactly that).
For much of Chicago Fire’s run, Shay was easily the most shocking death. She led such a troubled life that seeing her go down in such an untimely fashion was tough, and even upon rewatching, it can be a strain to get through her final episode (which was technically the season 2 finale).
What episode did Otis die on Chicago Fire?
It took several years for Chicago Fire to come up with a more shocking death than Shay’s, and boy did they deliver. Otis (Yuri Sartarov) was one of the most beloved characters on the show, and its major source of comic relief, so absolutely nobody thought that he would be killed by an infernal backdraft in the season 8 premiere. And yet, he was.
The connection that Otis had with the rest of the 51 squad, particularly Cruz (Joe Minoso), made it even harder to stomach the idea that he died. That’s not even taking into account that Cruz named his first child after Otis. Talk about getting hit right in the feels
