The cliffhanger has been burned into our memories by now. Chicago Fire season 11 ended with Casey (Jesse Spencer) proposing to Brett (Kara Killmer), and before we got an answer, the show cut to black. We have to wait until the season 12 premiere to find out Brett’s answer.
Or do we? Kara Killmer shared some exclusive behind-the-scenes footage of her and Spencer rehearsing the scene, and while there isn’t a concrete answer given in the rehearsal, a reaction to a crew member’s joke may point fans toward the truth.
The footage sees Killmer running through the climactic scene, including answering the door and talking to Spencer’s character. They pause at the crucial moment when the proposal happens, and before Killmer can respond, a crew member says “Say no.” Both actors laugh at the comment.
If the answer was truly “no” in the script, it’s hard to imagine Killmer and Spencer would have laughed at it, let alone that a crew member would make a joke about it. Chicago Fire has always entertained the notion that Brettsey would end up together in the end, so the notion that they make it past a rejected proposal seems a little far-fetched.
The scene was emotional to shoot, according to Killmer’s Instagram caption:
“I asked Jesse not to show me the ring until we were actually filming so I could be surprised,” she wrote. “Obviously there were some fun reactions from the peanut gallery.
Regardless of whether Brett says yes or no to Casey’s proposal, her life is going to be different. She’s recently adopted a child, and so a refusal, coupled with her recent break up, would lead to her prioritizing her newfound motherhood.
An acceptance would mean bringing a newly adopted child into the mix, and figuring out how to reconcile an engagement with someone who lives in another state. Either way, we can’t wait to see what happens in season 12.
