New footage from the set of Doctor Who reveals some of the action from the upcoming season 14. Now that Jodie Whittaker's time as the Thirteenth Doctor has come to an end, David Tennant is set to take up the role as the Fourteenth Doctor as the 60th anniversary draws nearer. Once the three anniversary specials are over, Ncuti Gatwa (Sex Education) will be taking over as the Fifteenth Doctor for season 14 and the foreseeable future.
Footage revealed by Doctor Who Filming Locations on Twitter offers a glimpse at some of the chaotic scenes from Doctor Who season 14. Check out the video and photo below:
The footage offers a look at Gatwa's earliest adventures as the stunt doubles for his Doctor and Bonnie Langford's Mel Bush — a returning companion from the Sixth and Seventh Doctor's runs — are seen riding on a moped and following a fleeing crowd. They appear to be looking back at something devastating in the sky, which would be a typical adventure for the Doctor Who universe.
A New Era For Doctor Who
Ncuti Gatwa as the Fifteenth Doctor in Doctor Who 60th anniversary special
Starting a new season with a new version of the Doctor will hardly be new ground for Doctor Who to cover. After all, Gatwa will be playing the Fifteenth Doctor, and that count fails to include iterations like the War Doctor and other characters who came in-between regenerations. Gatwa's run on Doctor Who will be breaking fresh ground all the same, however, by introducing new and old Doctor Who characters and weaving them into a fresh new narrative.
Former showrunner Russell T. Davies will be returning to helm the show and lead it in a unique direction. Doctor Who's budget will reportedly triple that of previous seasons, thanks to a new deal between the BBC and Disney that will give streaming rights to Disney+. As a show known for cheaper production quality and an ability to make a world-shattering drama out of aliens with whisk and plunger hands, this will be a serious shake-up that could change everything.
The show will return in November with three specials celebrating its 60th anniversary titled "The Star Beast," "Wild Blue Yonder," and "The Giggle." Gatwa and Langford will then have their team-up in season 14, all the while Gatwa's Doctor and his companion Ruby Sunday (Millie Gibson) develop their own take on the relationship between a Doctor and their companion. The future of Doctor Who looks brighter than ever as it ushers in a shining new era for the series.
