Don't Worry, The Ellie & Joel Dynamic Won't Be Gone In The Last Of Us Season 2

Ellie and Joel's dynamic is one of the best things about The Last of Us season 1, and many viewers are worried that it will be gone in season 2 - but it actually won't. Ellie and Joel's relationship is the heart of HBO's The Last of Us, with the series adapting the beloved video game duo in an incredibly faithful way. Ellie and Joel won't be the same in The Last of Us season 2, but another set of characters will be the perfect replacements.

HBO's The Last of Us season 1 is the live-action adaptation of the video game of the same name, with it following Joel and Ellie as they make the tumultuous journey to a Firefly hospital. The Last of Us will continue on HBO, with season 2 of the series adapting the second video game The Last of Us Part II. As players of the game know, The Last of Us Part II kills off Joel early on. However, that doesn't mean their dynamic will be completely gone in the upcoming second season.

Abby, Yara, & Lev Are The Perfect Joel & Ellie Replacements In The Last Of Us Season 2

Abby, Yara, and Lev in The Last of Us Part II

The death of Joel means that his relationship with Ellie will obviously be different in The Last of Us season 2. Luckily, though, Abby, Yara, and Lev will fill this same role in the upcoming season. During the events of The Last of Us Part II, Abby meets two young children named Yara and Lev. The siblings are members of the Seraphites, a group of religious radicals that attempt to hunt down Abby throughout her journey. Abby's friendship with Yara and Lev is one of the best parts of The Last of Us Part II, and it will probably be just as good in The Last of Us season 2.

The relationship between Abby, Yara and Lev is essentially the same as that of Joel and Ellie. Abby fulfills the role of Joel, with her being a gruff, hardened survivor that only has one goal in mind. Yara and Lev, however, fulfill the role of Ellie, with them being wonder-filled children who come to be loved by their respective guardians. In the narrative of The Last of Us Part II, Abby, Yara, and Lev are meant to be reflections of what Joel and Ellie once had, making them the perfect replacement in season 2.

Why Abby Could Meet Yara & Lev Much Earlier In The Last Of Us Season 2

Joel Embraces Ellie in The Last of Us season 1 episode 9 finale

It actually seems pretty likely that Abby could meet Yara and Lev much earlier in The Last of Us season 2 than she did in the game. The Last of Us Part II switches the player between controlling Ellie and Abby, with the game telling most of Ellie's story before moving to Abby. Because of this, Abby doesn't meet Yara and Lev until about halfway through the game.

The pacing of The Last of Us Part II is one of the game's most criticized elements, with the player not spending time with Abby until way too late. It's possible that The Last of Us season 2 could address this, switching between Abby and Ellie's perspectives at a more frequent rate. If this is the case, Abby will meet Yara and Lev much earlier, working with them throughout the story of The Last of Us season 2 as a parallel to Ellie and Joel's relationship.
