The hit Starz series Outlander returns for its penultimate season, with a host of new and returning characters joining the season 7 cast. The series follows the trials of Claire Fraser (Caitríona Balfe) after she time travels from post-World War 2 Britain to the 18th century,
forced to navigate the brutal era alongside her love, the Scottish laird Jamie (Sam Heughan), and daughter Bree (Sophie Skelton). Based on the best-selling book series by Diana Gabaldon, the epic series follows the Frasers across countries and allegiances as they fend off ruthlessness and treachery in their bid to keep their ever-growing family safe.
WEDNESDAY: Every Question We Want Answered in Season 2
While the Fraser-MacKenzie clan will be at the heart of all the drama, viewers may also be surprised to learn that Outlander season 7 will see several familiar faces return from the dead (including some major villains who will cause mischief and mayhem for everyone's fan favorite family). Given that season 7 is adapted from An Echo in the Bone, fans should also expect to see several new characters/talented actors join the cast as well.
Caitríona Balfe As Claire Fraser
Caitríona Balfe plays Claire, a former World War II nurse turned doctor, who traveled back in time to the 18th century. Claire’s independence, intelligence and persistence make her a woman to be reckoned with. However, thanks to her caring and compassionate nature, many of the characters seem to gravitate towards her. While Claire is certainly Balfe's most memorable role, she has also accrued much fame after starring in Oscar-nominated films, such as Ford v Ferrari (where she played Mollie Miles) and Belfast (playing Ma, a role which earned her Golden Globe and BAFTA nominations). She has also appeared in Hollywood blockbusters such as Now You See Me and Escape Plan.
Sam Heughan As Jamie Fraser
Jamie at the Battle of Culloden
Sam Heughan is also confirmed to be rejoining the Outlander season 7 cast as Jamie Fraser, the kind and fierce Highlander with whom Claire falls in love shortly after her arrival in 18th Century Scotland. While Jamie Fraser has helped Heughan gained international recognition, he is also remembered for playing Rob Burns in the rom-com Love Again, Ashton, Prince of Castlebury in A Christmas Princess, and Ryan in the drama series Suspect. He also appears in, Men in Kilts: A Roadtrip with Sam and Graham, wherein Heughan explores Scottish culture and history with fellow Outlander actor Graham McTavish.
Sophie Skelton As Brianna "Bree" Fraser MacKenzie
Outlander-season-6-Bree-Sophie-Skelton
Since season 2, Sophie Skelton has portrayed the empathetic and brave Brianna Fraser-MacKenzie. She is the daughter of Jamie and Claire, who decides to travel back to the 18th century after learning of an impending house fire that will take the lives of her parents. Like many of her Outlander season 7 cast members, Brianna is considered to be Skelton's biggest and most successful role as it has earned her several Saturn Award nominations. However, some may also remember her for playing the titular role in short-lived fantasy series Ren and appearing in many British continuing dramas, including Casualty, Doctors and The Dumping Ground.
Richard Rankin As Roger Mackenzie
Roger MacKenzie on Outlander
Richard Rankin is also reprising his role in season 7 as Bree’s devoted and intelligent husband Roger. Like his many of his Outlander cast members, Rankin was already an established actor as he had several impressive credits in his resume. He played restaurant owner Reece Waiter in the Bradley Cooper film Burnt, DI Elliott Carner in the BBC miniseries Thirteen, and Captain Thomas Gillan in WWI BBC drama Crimson Fields. Similar to his role as Roger in season 7, he also played a religious priest called Father Hrothweard in another epic historical series, Netflix’s The Last Kingdom.
John Bell As Young Ian
Ian Murray in Outlander
Returning to the Outlander season 7 cast to play Jamie’s fierce and wise nephew, “Young” Ian Fraser Murray, is John Bell. Although Bell hasn't been in the show as long as his other colleagues, he is one of their most prolific and successful actors as he has been part of several blockbuster movies, playing Bain in the Hobbit films, Helius in 2012’s Wrath of The Titans and a younger Spud in T2 Trainspotting. He has also starred in Into The Badlands as Gabriel and Angus in Battleship.
César Domboy As Fergus Fraser
Fergus
César Domboy will continue the role of older Fergus, Jamie's foster son, who he befriended when he and Claire were in Paris in season 2. Unlike his Outlander cast members, Domboy has found fame in both French and English cinema, playing Jeff/Jean-François in Joseph Gordon Levitt in 2015’s The Walk, Tom in French-language Netflix film No Limit, and Ernest in The Mad Woman's Ball. He has also played Guy de Leval in Borgia and Mayenne in The Princess of Montpensier.
Lauren Lyle As Marsali Fraser
Marsali in season 6 of Outlander
As Marsali plays an important role in the books, fans will be delighted to know that Lauren Lyle is returning to play Jamie's fierce stepdaughter in Outlander season 7. While Marsali is considered to be her most successful role, Lyle also achieved critical acclaim for playing Jade in the popular British mystery series Vigil and the titular detective in another book-to-TV adaptation, the crime drama Karen Pirie. She is also known for playing Chloe Demichelis in the drama Broken and Rhona in Mercy Falls.
David Berry As Lord John Grey
David Berry will reprise his role as the kind and honorable English diplomat, Lord John Grey. Although Grey appears intermittently throughout the series, he is considered to be one of Outlander's best characters as he will do anything to protect the Frasers from harm. Before he joined the Outlander cast in 2017, the actor was best known for playing James Bligh in the popular Australian period drama A Place to Call Home, Logan Meyer in the Australian soap Home and Away, and Dan Burrell in the thriller series Riptide. His other notable projects also include Damien in the fantasy horror, Progeny, and Warren Deans in Barons.
Outlander Supporting Cast & Characters
Steven Cree as Ian Murray: Steven Cree plays Ian Murray, Jamie’s close friend and father to young Ian. Along with his wife Jenny, Ian resides across the ocean at Jamie’s ancestral home, Lallybroch. Cree has appeared in A Discovery of Witches, the BBC series The Diplomat (not to be confused with the recent Netflix series of the same name) and played another Scottish warrior, Christopher Seton, in Netflix’s Outlaw King.
Kristin Atherton as Jenny Murray: Jenny Murray is Jamie’s sister. Married to Ian, she protects Lallybroch, demonstrating the same stubbornness and loyalty as her brother. Replacing Laura Donnelly in the role for Outlander season 7, Kristin Atherton is an accomplished Shakespearean actor who has starred in numerous productions for the RSC, as well as appearing in popular British dramas Doctors and Waterloo Road.
