Shadow and Bone Season 3: Cast and showrunners discuss future plans

The fantasy series Shadow and Bone's second season premiered on March 16, 2023, and fans are wondering if there will be a third season. In Season 2, Alina and her allies faced the challenge of defeating the Fold and Kirigan's rule. The season finale saw the Darkling's demise and left viewers with unanswered questions about Alina's newfound powers and Nikolai's fate. Will there be Shadow and Bones Season 3?

The series is based on the Grishaverse books by Leigh Bardugo and has a talented cast including Ben Barnes, Jessie Mei Li, Freddy Carter, and Archie Renaux. The second season covered most of the events from the books "Siege and Storm" and "Ruin and Rising," with the season finale concluding with the death of the Darkling.

While an official announcement regarding the renewal of Shadow and Bone for a third season is still pending, the overwhelming success of the show makes it highly probable. In an interview with Collider, Showrunner Eric Heisserer previously revealed his well-thought-out "three-season plan" for the series, indicating a clear intention to continue the story beyond the second season. Moreover, author Leigh Bardugo expressed her ambitious vision of extending the Grishaverse saga with an impressive five additional seasons, promising a truly epic narrative.

Shadow and Bone made its debut on Netflix in April 2021. However, fans had to endure a significant wait of over two years for the release of Season 2, likely caused by production setbacks resulting from the pandemic. As for Season 3, the timing of its premiere is yet to be confirmed. However, based on the previous gap between seasons, it might air during the holiday season of 2024. Nonetheless, it is important to note that this is purely speculative, and official announcements from the show's creators are needed to confirm the exact release date.

Jessie Mei has recently discussed the cast's eagerness for another installment of the Shadow and Bone narrative in an interview with Collider, stating that there are "definitely plans in the works."

"We have definitely had discussions regarding the potential paths our characters could take. However, due to the streaming platform's nature, it ultimately depends on the show's viewership and the audience's response," she revealed.

"I genuinely hope that people watch and enjoy it because I would love the opportunity to continue and conclude that story, to witness Alina's journey. The series has left us in an incredibly thrilling position, and it would be a great pity to end the story there."

As of now, the details of the plot for Season 3 of Shadow and Bone remain undisclosed. Leigh Bardugo's novels won't offer significant insight into what lies ahead, as the second season has already covered substantial portions of the source material.

The second season incorporated elements from not only the second and third books of the Shadow and Bone trilogy but also from other Grishaverse books, including Six of Crows and Crooked Kingdom. However, this doesn't imply that there is no more story to tell. The finale of Season 2 deviates from the original book trilogy, concluding with the Darkling's demise. Nonetheless, Alina and Mal find their happy ending, with Alina assumed to be deceased, allowing her to adopt a new identity and reopen the orphanage where they both grew up.

Netflix's adaptation diverges significantly by separating the pair at the end of Season 2 while introducing a new darkness into Alina's world. The ultimate conclusion of the series may eventually mirror that of the books, but Season 3 has plenty of new ground to cover, rendering book fans unaware of what lies ahead.

Ben Barnes expressed his lack of knowledge regarding the future trajectory of the storyline but mentioned that Shadow and Bone is "poised very beautifully" for a Six of Crows story.

In an interview with Cosmopolitan, he stated, "I'm a huge fan of those next two books, which obviously don't involve the Darkling. I haven't been informed about anything beyond this moment, so who knows?"

Meanwhile, Jessie Mei Li shared with Collider that she and her fellow cast members would "love" to proceed with Season 3 and confirmed the existence of "definitely plans in the works."

"There have been discussions about the potential paths our characters might take, but ultimately, it relies on the viewership and audience response, given the nature of streaming platforms," she added.

"I genuinely hope that people watch and enjoy it because I would love the opportunity to continue and conclude that story, to witness Alina's journey. Equally, I have had the most amazing time on Shadow and Bone, and I will always hold it dearly. Please watch our show so I can reunite and have more adventures with my friends. The ending impacted me greatly. They've left it in an incredibly thrilling place, and it would be such a shame to conclude the story there."

While an official confirmation for Shadow and Bone Season 3 is currently lacking, fans of the Grishaverse can still find excitement in the promise of a Six of Crows spinoff. Stay tuned for updates on the Netflix series!
