The 'Outlander' castle in Edinburgh that is perfect for a June day out

With the weekend finally here, it is time to start thinking about how to make the most of it.

Now that summer has well and truly begun, and the temperature is rising, there is no better way to spend your Saturday or Sunday than getting out and exploring some of the best that Scotland has to offer. Assuming the sun stays out, an outdoor activity is always a good shout.

Fortunately, there is a seemingly endless list of things to see and do outside around the country. From colourful gardens to scenic villages, there is something to suit every taste.

If you're struggling to whittle down your laundry list of ideas, though, then Craigmillar Castle is a safe bet — particularly if you're an Outlander fan.

Those who have seen the series will no doubt remember back to the third season, when main character Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan) is imprisoned along with other Jacobite warriors in the fictional Ardsmuir Prison, under the control of Lord John Grey.

What you may not have known, however, is that this 'prison' is actually a historic castle in Edinburgh. Craigmillar Castle is found around three miles out of the city centre, on a low hill south of the modern suburb of Craigmillar.

The castle has a fascinating history dating back to the 14th century, when it was a simple tower house residence built by the Preston family of Craigmillar. Over the years, many additions were made as it passed on to new owners.

One of the most interesting chapters in its history is undoubtedly when Mary, Queen of Scots briefly called the castle her home in 1566. Due to an illness brought about by the birth of her son, Mary arrived at the estate on November 20 to recover for roughly two weeks — with her bedroom on the first floor open to visitors.

Importantly, before the Queen departed on December 7, a pact known as the Craigmillar Bond was drawn up, either with or without her involvment, to kill her husband Henry Stuart, Lord Darnley.

While the castle is open to the public, there are some restrictions currently in place due to safety concerns. Nonetheless, it is well worth a visit, especially if you need an Outlander fix to tide you over until the start of season seven later this month.
