Law & Order: SVU season 25 is not coming to NBC in July 2023

Law & Order: SVU is still going strong. The procedural drama has been on the air for a staggering 24 seasons, and has been officially renewed for another. It seems like nothing can slow the show down, which is great news for longtime fans.

“I’m pleased to continue my four-decade relationship with Universal Television and NBC,” wrote creator Dick Wolf upon the show’s renewal. “All six shows being picked up again is the ultimate accolade to our incredible casts, producers and writers. I’d also like to thank our loyal fans who have kept our NBC shows on the air for what will be a cumulative 84 seasons.”

Is Law & Order: SVU renewed for season 25?

Unfortunately, fans will not be getting the season 25 premiere anytime soon. Law & Order: SVU will not be premiering in July 2023. This is pretty standard among shows that release during the fall season.

Law & Order: SVU generally wraps up around May, and takes a couple of months off during the summer to allow time for the cast to recharge and the writers to work on new scripts. September is generally the month in which it returns.

Again, generally. The writers strike has changed things with regards to the 2023/24 season. The strike, which has been going on for most of the summer, has put a halt to production on most all scripted shows, as writers are refusing to work until their demands are met. It’s unclear how long the strike will last, but assuming it continues for another month or two, it could seriously affect the rollout for network television’s fall lineup.

ABC, for example, has switched over to all reality shows in the fall, and decided to push scripted dramas like The Good Doctor and Station 19 back to 2024. This not means there will be a delay in the season premieres, but it means the seasons themselves will have a reduced episode count.

NBC has made no such decisions, which means there’s still a chance that Law & Order: SVU and the other Law & Order shows will be able to start production on time and make it to air during its originally planned month. We will provide updates as they are made available.
