Dune: Part 2 now has an interesting connection to another Warner Brothers project. The director personally called a showrunner for an extraordinarily successful series to help with the script.
Dune was released in 2021 being a box-office success earning $402. Additionally, the film was widely acclaimed by both critics and audiences. The film was nominated for 10 Academy Awards and won 6. The Sequel will be focused on Paul who is played by Timothee Chalamet as he tries to bring peace to Arrakis while also getting revenge for his father's death. Denis Villeneuve and Jon Spaihts are returning to co-write the sequel. Even with the success of the first film the director still wanted even more talent to help with the script.
Craig Mazin who is the co-showrunner for HBO’s The Last of Us told Josh Horowitz on the “Happy Sad Confused” podcast that Villeneuve who is also directing Dune: Part 2 reached out to him to help work on the script. Mazin also said that he is focused on TV and almost entirely out of the movie business, but he’ll make some exceptions. “I’ll work with certain directors when they call because I love them and because they’re so brilliant,” Mazin continued. “So if Denis Villeneuve calls, then absolutely. I’m there for three, four weeks — a month — to work on what you’re working on.”
Mazin will also receive a writer's credit for contributing to the script that prior to 2022 he would’ve not gotten for his work. In January of 2022, the Writer’s Guild of America announced that writers’ names would appear during the end credits of a film and on industry databases for work that “rendered WGA-covered writing services on theatrical features who do not receive writing credit,” according to the official guild page. Mazin said, “You come in, you do a little work, and then you leave. It used to be that you couldn’t even say that… But now they have this additional literary material [credit].”
It's great to see that talented writers like Mazin can finally get some credit for helping to write film scripts. Villeneuve is not the only big director who was impressed by The Last of Us, Steven Spielberg sent a note with his reaction to one of the episodes. The writing for both Dune and The Last of Us series was phenomenal so with both creative groups working together on Dune: Part 2 expectations are very high.
